What Are The Best Materials To Seal EV Batteries

The widespread use of electric vehicles has changed the way transport is viewed. It provides a better solution for sustainable mobility. The rapid development of this technology provides an important opportunity. It can reduce environmental impact, minimise carbon emissions, and reduce oil dependency. Battery technology is at the heart of electric vehicles. The sealing of the battery is critical to its performance, safety, and longevity. In this paper, we look at What Are The Best Materials To Seal EV Batteries? We must ensure that electric vehicles maintain a wide range of reliable performance in real-world application environments.

The Need for Sealed EV Batteries

As we mentioned above, at the heart of electric vehicles is battery technology. The sealing properties of batteries are critical to ensuring their performance, safety, and longevity. And what exactly is the importance of sealing automotive batteries? Trumonytechs compiled and introduced the importance of sealing automotive batteries.

Protect the internal components of the battery

The inside of the battery contains complex chemical reactions and components. Without effective sealing, moisture, pollutants, and impurities in the external environment may enter the battery. These elements may react with the chemicals inside the battery in an unstable manner, leading to a degradation of the battery’s performance.

Preventing electrolyte leakage

Electric vehicle batteries use electrolytes to conduct current. Poor sealing can lead to electrolyte leakage. This reduces the battery’s electrical capacity. It can also cause hazardous situations, such as fire or corrosion.

Maintaining Battery Performance

Problems with sealing can lead to reduced battery performance. This results in various problems, such as reduced energy storage and release efficiency. Reduced battery life and frequent maintenance or replacement of batteries increase maintenance costs. This is detrimental to the widespread use of electric vehicles.

Ensure the safety of electric vehicles

Under poor sealing conditions, EV batteries may be affected by external shocks or temperature fluctuations. This increases the risk of fire or explosion. Effective sealing is important to ensure the safety of electric vehicles.

What Are The Best Materials To Seal EV Batteries

Common Battery Sealing Materials

Companies in the rapidly growing electric vehicle market are struggling to find the best combination of design and materials. In our experience working with major EV manufacturers, we identified several reliable battery-sealing materials for EVs. Chief among them are double-sided LSE tape and acrylic foam tape. This section will discuss why these two types of tape materials are the best choice for EV battery sealing.

Low Surface Energy tape

LSE tapes can adhere to surfaces that are normally difficult to bond to.

Many surfaces have other impurities which means they are more difficult to bond to. For example, metals often leave a grease residue, a coating used to prevent rust and other corrosion. These coatings can make it more difficult for adhesives to bond. You can do so by adding surface texture or using other adhesive materials, such as double-sided LSE tape.

The internal components of an EV battery may be coated with different coatings. Test with different LSE sealing materials to prevent future failure.

Pros and cons of double-sided LSE tape:

Pros:

Ability to adhere to surfaces with low surface energy.

Suitable for a wide range of coatings and surfaces.

High adhesive strength and better durability.

Disadvantages:

May degrade in performance at extreme temperatures.

Requires surface treatment or selection of appropriate LSE type to ensure adhesion.

Acrylic Foam Tape

Electric vehicle batteries can reach high temperatures, up to 158-212 degrees Fahrenheit (70-100 degrees Celsius). This increases the risk of thermal runaway, similar to internal combustion engines.

Acrylic foam tapes offer durability and resistance to high temperatures. I am making them ideal for attaching internal components of electric vehicle batteries.

Attaching parts with acrylic foam tapes is quick, easy, and clean. There is little room for error, especially if you want to use pre-cut tapes or look for sealing materials. This is unlike mechanical fasteners (like screws and bolts) or liquid adhesives.

Acrylic foam tape is lightweight and strong, making it ideal for assembling electric vehicle battery components. Each new component must be attached.

Pros and cons of acrylic foam tape:

Pros:

High-temperature resistant, suitable for high-temperature environments inside batteries.

Durable and suitable for long-term use.

Easy to use, reducing the chance of mistakes.

Disadvantages:

Higher costs may be more expensive compared to other sealing materials.

How to choose sealing materials for electric vehicle batteries?

Based on the above, we suggest that when selecting sealing materials for electric vehicle batteries, consider several factors. This will ensure the battery’s performance, safety, and reliability. Several factors need understanding: battery design, material durability, sealing performance, adhesion performance, temperature range, cost, regulations, and certifications. The final choice may require a balance between different performance metrics and consideration of what the budget allows. It is also important to conduct experiments and tests to verify the performance of the selected material in real-world applications. Choosing the right sealing material is critical to the performance and reliability of an EV battery. It ensures stable operation under a wide range of conditions, extends service life, and reduces maintenance costs.
